>Iowa?!? WTF?!?

>

I used to have such high hopes for Iowa, and Iowans. They seemed to be free-thinking, equality-minded, live and let live kind of people.

When marriage equality became the law of Iowa, most Iowans just shrugged and went back to work. And when people, and by people I mean the GOP, who have nothing better to do than work to discriminate against the LGBT community, got all hot’n’bothered about same-sex marriage, the majority of Iowans asked their politicians to give it up. They were more concerned about war and money and jobs, and less concerned that John married Joe, or Jane got hitched to Helen.

Like I said, I had high hopes.

But then they elected people who seek to overturn equality, and remove judges from the bench who interpret laws in ways they don’t see fit, and I began to wonder about my Iowans.

And now this:

It seems that nearly half of Iowan Republicans believe President Obama was not born in the United States. Seriously. Once their heads were screwed on straight, and now they’re all askew.

Some 48% of registered Republican voters said Obama was not born in the U.S., while 26% say he is an American. Even more scary is the 26% who say they are unsure. Unsure? Seriously?

Let me set this queer for you Iowans. The people, and by people I mean Birther wingnuts and GOP goosesteppers who sidestep the issue, who don’t think Obama was born in this country think so simply because of the color of his skin. I mean, black people becoming president!

Or, they think because his name is Barack that he isn’t from “here”. I mean, if his name was George or Bill, we wouldn’t be having this discussion, would we?

Say what you will, you Birther wingnuts, but you are riding this one-trick pony out of racism and fear and ignorance. Neither the color of a man’s skin, nor his name alone, makes a man unAmerican.

And Iowans should know better. Or, at least, I thought they did.

And maybe now, since Obama has released his birth certificate AGAIN, we can focus on real issues.

>Indiana Puts Bigotry Into Their Constitution

>

Wow. Discrimination in the Constitution.

Yup, the Indiana House of Representatives voted to amend a ban of gay marriages and civil unions into the state’s constitution.

Yup. Homophobia.In.The.Constitution.

Naturally, this happened because the Indiana House is predominantly Republican, and the vote, 70-26, occurred strictly along party lines. Of course, there was the usual discussion and arguments along both sides, and the issue was weighed heavily. What’s that? It didn’t? it wasn’t?

The actual debate on denying people equality based solely on their sexual orientation took all of thirty minutes.

The bill’s author, and chief bigot, Republican Eric Turner, muttered that old chestnut about traditional marriage, saying, “The basic unit of society is the family, and the cornerstone of the family is marriage. Marriage is, and should be, the union of one man and one woman.”

Yawn.

Democratic Representative, Mary Ann Sullivan, dubbed the ban “a blow that hurts thousands across this great state, and taints our constitution with the language of hate.”

In.The.Constitution.

Sullivan then added that the passing of such a ban “removes talented people from classrooms and business, weakens the arts, our culture and progress, makes all of our cities less vibrant and diverse – the kinds of conditions that make economies worse.”

Republican asshat and goosestepper of hate, Ralph Foley, actually countered with the idea that the ban would have no effect on Hoosiers’ ability to live with and love whomever they choose, saying, “That loving friendship is a different relationship than a husband and wife, and we should recognize that in the law.”

So, two men who love one another and want to build a life together and raise a family, or not, together, is vastly different than a man and a woman wanting the exact same thing?

And, in addition, their little bigot ban also prohibits civil unions.

It boils down to this: gay people are not wanted, recognized, respected, or treated equally in Indiana.

Nice.

>Separation Of Church And State? Not If Certain Iowans Have Their Way

>

Out in Iowa, the wingnuts are at it again.

House Study Bill 50, AKA the Religious Conscience Protection Act, would make it legal for an Iowa business owner to cite religious beliefs when refusing to provide jobs, housing, goods or services to people involved in a marriage that violates his or her religious convictions. And they could deny services without fear of facing a civil claim or lawsuit if they think doing so would validate or recognize same-sex relationships.

So, the religious wingnut landlord can look you straight in the face and deny you a home because you’re in a same-sex marriage.
The grocery store could refuse to sell you eggs.
Your boss could fire you.
And you have no recourse.
Is it just me, or is it getting Dark Ages in Iowa?

But as is the way with wingnuts, bigots, haters, homophobes, and your average everyday run-of-the-mill fucktards, the bill is so broadly written that perhaps, it would also apply to a married couple, if say one was a Christian and the other a Jew, or if a woman married a much younger man, or if the couple could not, or chose not to, procreate.

Religious beliefs would trump law.

Fucktard Congress men, and, of course, Republican, Richard–I prefer to call him Dick–Anderson sponsored the bill, and says it’s intent is to protect religious liberty, and he cites a couple of amendments: “i think what we’re trying to do is balance constitutional amendments. There is the 14th Amendment that we’ve heard a lot about. There’s also the First Amendment.”

Let’s look at these: the 14th Amendment includes the equal protection clause, requiring states to provide equal protection to all citizens under the law.

Equal protection to all citizens. Did you miss that part, Dick?

As for the First Amendment, well, it prohibits laws that infringe on free exercise of religion.

Let me get this queer; so Dick is saying that if gay people can marry and a religious zealot owns a Piggly Wiggly, letting the gay couple buy milk and eggs, infringes on Mr, Piggly Wiggly’s free exercise of religion?

Quite a stretch, Dick.

Luckily, cooler, more rational, less reliant on wingnutism, heads, prevail, and this likelihood of this bill becoming anything more than a study are slim to none.

Which is good.

But, what’s bad is that elected officials, like Dick Anderson, are wasting time on their own idiotic bigoted viewpoints when they should be working to fix what ails Iowa, like, oh, maybe the economy….global warming….any number of other things. But, like most good Republicans, they’d rather focus on hate.

>Elton Had A Baby So The BBC Interviewed A ‘Kill The Gays’ Supporter

>

Elton John and his partner David Furnish had a baby via a surrogate mother.
And, apparently all hell broke loose.
It seems that Andrew Pierce, some English columnist, feels the Furnish-John’s had a baby because they wanted a new accessory, a new plaything. God forbid they had a baby for the same reasons most couples do, because they want to be parents.
People gossiped about the round-the-clock nannies, and the special renovations being done at Elton’s Los Angeles penthouse to create the most dazzling nursery ever. But, I wonder here, if Elton and David were a straight couple using surrogacy, a straight couple with loads of money to raise the child in the lap of luxury, would we be raising such a fuss?
It’s 2011, people, let’s stop qualifying people by their sexual orientation. Let’s talk about parenting, or coupling, or creating a life together, without making noise about the so-called differences between the straight way and the gay way.
And, while we’re at it, let’s take a good long look at the media, not just here in our country, where the New York Post lauded Elton and his “wife”for having a baby, but also let’s peek at the BBC, who decided to make their coverage of the Furnish-John baby a little more balanced by including an interview with a supporter of state sponsored execution of gay men in its coverage of the birth.
Really? To make a story of two men who want a child, to raise a child, to nurture a child, more fair and equitable, you include information about killing gay people?
This, murder, is fair?
See, back on the 28th of December, the BBC’s News at Six bulletin ended with the story of Elton John and David Furnish’s first child. There were no interviews with the new fathers, just news of the birth, followed by one interview, with Stephen Green, of right-wing group Christian Voice; Green is someone who has in the past supported the death penalty for gay men.
Birth of a child? Execution of gay men?
I must be missing the point. Or, is the BBC missing the point?
When does this end? Where is the joy over the news of a child being born, without the instant stigma and blatant homophobia and bigotry because the child is born to a gay couple?
I long for the advancement of equality for LGBT people, where we can have a child, or not have a child, marry, or not marry, live where we choose, work where we choose, walk down a street without fear of attack or harassment simply for being LGBT.
But we’ll never achieve that equality when a fair and balanced news story about a gay couple, famous or nor, having a child, includes interviews with people who wish to see gay men put to death.

>Odds’n’Ends

>

I haven’t talked about this whole TSA scanning mess because, well, everyone else was doing it, and doing just fine. But now, since it’s the story that won’t die, and since there is an ALLEGED plot to shut down the system tomorrow, the biggest travel day of the year, by having everyone ask for the pat down, I thought I’d throw in my two-cents. So, here there are:
Build a fucking bridge and get over it.
Seriously. If you’re that worried about you scanned image being seen, and laughed at, or titillating a TSA agent, then opt out and go for the pat down. If you are that worried about the pat down, that a TSA agent might touch your junk, or that you might get a little aroused, then opt out of that and find the nearest bus station, train  station, or car rental agency and travel unscanned and unfondled to your heart’s content.
See, I think the people that are the most enraged are actually people who don’t fly often. And I think the people that fly often are more upset about any added delay rather than a scan and a hand job. As for this National Opt Out Day, do you really think the airlines are going to hold flights because everyone is getting a TSA massage? No; you’ll just miss your flight and bitch about that.
Grow a pair, or strap a pair on.
One more thing, the very people complaining about this invasion of privacy are the very same people who would file a lawsuit against an airline if a family member died as a result of a terrorist attempt on board a plane.

Well, it looks like Grampa McCain might have to eat his words. According to the Pentagon there were no discharges under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell last month. And there were no stories of a lack of unit cohesion or morale or gays hitting on guys in the shower.
Grampa? You’re old. You’re out of touch.

I still get the giggles when I think of Mama Grizzly Bore’s assertion that she believes she can beat Barack Obama in 2012. I mean, does she think they’ll be competing on Dancing With The Stars or something? I just read a new poll that, while it shows that some 49% think Obama shouldn’t run for reelection, it shows that if he did, he’d beat The Bore by about 8-percentage points.
I believe she can run, back to Alaska to find more ways to scam the American people out of their hard earned dollars by “writing” another book.
Sidenote: Mama Grizzly Bore says she won’t ever do another interview with Katie Couric because Katie is biased against her because she asked tough questions about the Constitution and what books or newspapers MGB reads. And then MGB goes on to say that she got a degree on communications from one of the many colleges she attended before finally graduating, so she knows how to be a good journalist. She knows how to ask the Who, What, Where, Where, Why and How questions…..she just doesn’t know how to answer them.

The Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC] has recently added a couple of mare na\mes to their list of hate groups. and they are: the Family Research Council and the American Family Association.
Yes, these two morally superior organizations that preach to know what’s best for this country are now listed as hate groups.
Sounds about right.

>Clint McCance Is Out……Of A Job

>Midland School Board Member Clint McCance is resigning.

Halle-freakin-lujah!

Clint McCance:
“I am going to resign from the school board. It is to–to help my community, to help my school. I don’t want them to receive bad press or have a distraction because of some ignorant comments that have–that I made. If they decide later, you know, a year, five years, 10 years from now to vote me back in, if my constituents want that, then–then I will run again.”

Hopefully your constituents will have long-term memory and you will never be on any school board, anywhere, any time, ever. But then Clint McCance wants to apologize:

“I–you know, I would–would like to extend an apology, especially to those to those–to those families that have lost children, not just gay, heterosexual, all–all children that feel like suicide’s the only way out. It’s a–it saddens me, and–but especially for those five — five families that have just recently lost children. You know, I have–I have brought more hurt on them with these comments. And that was never my intention. And I apologize for that, because they don’t–they don’t deserve that. And I do feel genuinely bad for that, for them.”

Too little, too late. I might forgive, might, but I find it hard to forget that Clint McCance wished and hoped and prayed, that LGBTQ youth would kill themselves. Hopefully, he’ll learn to think before he speaks, and keep his homophobia and hate to himself.
Here’s McCance on Anderson Cooper 360:
